My name is Malakai Miller, I was born on June 19, 1996. I was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey however I currently reside in Richmond, Virginia. In high school I was a member of the Beta Club, National Science Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. I also competed in Tennis (freshman year) and Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field (junior and senior year) where I competed in shot put and discus. One of the best experiences I cherish was with the marching band, we competed in several states and won all of our competitions. Being in band during high school encouraged me to join Morehouse House of Funk marching band.
Throughout high school I have received many awards and positions including Senior Class Treasurer, and also I placed in the state of Virginia junior year for Advertisement Design. Although I have received many honors through school it wasn't an easy journey when I moved to Virginia in 2010 I dealt with my parents divorce. Then sophomore year I was diagnosed with scoliosis and missed time in school for surgery. The surgery recovery period was my life's turning point because I during that time I vowed that once I got better I would dedicate myself to serving others. Being in mentoring during high school really allowed me to give back. We volunteered at the Salvation Army to make Christmas baskets for kids; one thing I cherish was that we helped set up the Walk for Breast Cancer last October.
The greatest achievement I've made so far was accepting admission to Morehouse College. My NSO experience really gave me more a drive to come back to VA and NJ to serve in the communities. I am a Biology major and after graduating I intend on going to medical school to become an Emergency Medicine Physician. The decision into becoming a doctor wasn't something I came up with over night, it's something I believe is my calling. Even as a freshman I believe Morehouse is the door to my future.
